Atlantic County government has received several inquiries and complaints about the lack of progress in repairing Weymouth Road Bridge in Hammonton. The bridge was closed by NJ Transit in late January 2026 for repairs following an inspection by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) that identified continued deterioration and a zero ton load rating.
As of May, the county was told NJ Transit was preparing repair plans and anticipated construction would begin before the end of this year.
When the county’s Planning Department Head most recently reached out for a status update, she was told NJ Transit had implemented a new detour and design plans were still underway.
County Executive Dennis Levinson noted this is a NJ Transit project, not an Atlantic County project. Atlantic County has no authority or jurisdiction for repairs to this NJ Transit owned and operated bridge.
“We certainly have empathy for the impact of this bridge closure on our local residents. It is up to NJ Transit to fulfill its commitment to make these necessary repairs,” stated Levinson. “I encourage township officials to put pressure on NJ Transit as well as their state representatives to complete this project in a timely manner and communicate updates with the public so it accurately understands the cause for any delays.”
