DeBiaso proved that Thursday with his best game so far this fall.

The sophomore finished with 156 rushing yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mainland Regional High School football team to a 42-0 win over Egg Harbor Township in a West Jersey Football League interdivision game. The Mustangs (5-2) are No. 6 in The Press Elite 11. The Eagles fell to 4-3.

“I feel pretty good,” DeBiaso said. “To be honest, I couldn’t have done it without my line. It’s the only reason I’m getting yards out there. Them blocking and all the hard work and hours we put in.”

DeBiaso rushed 74 yards for a TD in the first quarter to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. Near the end of his run, DeBiaso’s older brother and fellow running back, Rocco, made a key block that allowed Lucas to run untouched into the endzone.

Rocco finished with 82 rushing yards, including a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.

“It’s an amazing feeling being out there with my brother,” said Lucas, 15, of Linwood. “We always talked about it. Now, here we are. Actually being able to do it.”

Lucas also ran for a 4-yard TD in the second quarter to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 21-0. He rushed for a 37-yard TD in the third quarter to cap the scoring. He rushed for 118 yards in the first half.

“Good job by him,” Smith said. “Every week he has gotten better and better. He plays 100% all the time, even in practice. It’s really nice to see him have a breakout game (Thursday).”

Jake Blum caught a 17-yard TD pass from John Franchini to give Mainland a 28-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Blum caught a 39-yard TD pass from Franchini to extend the lead to 35-0.

Franchini finished with 133 passing yards. Blum added 115 receiving yards.

“You know, EHT is having a great season,” Smith said. “They are 4-2, a lot of size, their quarterback (Xavier Cocci) is really good. It was nice to see us come out of the gates and put back-to-back wins together. It has been a tough season.”

EHT forced two turnovers in the first half. The Eagles’ TJ Biglan recovered a fumble and Kamel Gibson made an interception off a deflection. Mainland led 7-0 after those turnovers, but EHT could not capitalize and was forced to punt.

Mainland also forced two first-half turnovers.

After Cocci’s 64-yard pass to Thomas Thompson to set up the Eagles at the Mainland 6-yard line, the Mustangs’ Khaleeb Foster recovered a fumble in the endzone two plays later. Liam Kennedy made an interception with 15 seconds left in the second quarter for Mainland.

Cocci finished with 114 yards for EHT.

“We had two two turnovers that bogged us down,” Smith said. “It was still scary. Then they hit that big play that could have made it 14-7. But the team responded well. They capitalized. The defense played tremendous, holding them to hardly anything. It was a good performance by the team.”

The Mustangs have a big matchup next Friday when they host Winslow Township (6-0), which is the top-ranked team in the Elite 11. Mainland defeated Winslow in the state semifinals last season.

“Winslow is a tremendous team,” Smith said. “One of the best teams in all of South Jersey, if not the state. A lot of talent there. You know, we had a battle with them last year. But everyone is different. We will have our hands full. Need to figure out what we need to get better at this week and start worrying about them on Saturday.”

Lucas DeBiaso said “hopefully we can carry this on and hopefully we can bring it to them and come out with the W.”
