There is always a lot of buildup and hype around New Year’s Eve. Unlike just about any other normal night out, it comes with an exaggerated sense of high expectations that need to be delivered, and if they aren’t, the whole night ends up feeling like a bit of a disappointment. And that means dinner can’t just be at any old place; it has to be special, and it has to be memorable. So our mission this year is to help you avoid the possibility of a big letdown by offering a list of some of our favorite spots for an awesome New Year’s Eve dinner. When my family first purchased a summer house in South Jersey back in 1989, one of the first places we went to get fresh fish was Bob’s Seafood in Absecon. I was only 11 years old at the time, but I have distinct memories of loving pretty much anything my parents brought back from Bob’s. A few months ago when I was deciding what shacks to include in this column, it dawned on me that I had not featured Bob’s Seafood. This had to change.

Since the earliest days of my Shackin’ Up column, folks have been telling me to check out a little place in Villas called Fish and Fancy. This summer I finally got around to trying it. I now understand what all the fuss was about, as this spot checks all the boxes for a classic Jersey Shore seafood shack.

With fried seafood being the main focus of many of my Shackin’ Up columns, it’s nice once in a while to take a break from the breading. And so when I heard about a new restaurant in Ventnor based around the concept of seafood boils, I was all in.
