Food And Drink

Often, when I look for subjects for this column, I try and search for sandwiches that are a little unique or outside the norm in some way. Maybe it’s a traditional sub presented in a nontraditional way, or maybe it has a list of ingredients not normally found between two pieces of bread; maybe it has a crazy sauce on it or a flavor combination I haven’t come across before. All of these are valid reasons to stop in and give something a try, but sometimes you are just in the mood for a classic — one that comes without any crazy twists or turns.

When you talk about the best subs in South Jersey, the conversation doesn’t go very long before somebody brings up Sugar Hill Sub Shop in Mays Landing. And for good reason. A classic no-frills American deli, Sugar Hill offers some damn good sandwiches, with everything from standards like turkey, roast beef or ham and cheese to a long list of one-of-a-kind specialty subs.

‘Tis the season for wine and food pairings! Are you ready? While I always encourage you to drink what you like, when it comes to enjoying wine and food together the big thing you want to do is avoid disaster. Generally speaking, here are three quick tips, followed by my personal wine selection, as we near Thanksgiving:

Well, here we are. The final week of 50 Bites. We have spent the last six weeks running all over, sampling morsel after delicious morsel, wearing out our feet in the process and loving every minute of it. And, if we have proven one thing, it’s that with the right energy and motivation, knocking down multiple Bites in a relatively short period of time is a very achievable goal.

For a few years now I have been hearing a lot of positive chatter about a place in Hammonton called Funky Cow Cafe. The Funky Cow is a casual lunch spot, open only from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Mondays and Tuesdays. They are best known for their waffles, both savory and sweet, which can be enjoyed in dessert form topped with ice cream and various toppings, or as the bread on one of their many sandwiches.

Week 6 already? Wow. If you’ve stuck it out this long, congratulations! You are a trooper and exactly the kind of dedicated foodie we had in mind when we created the concept of 50 Bites. On the other hand, if this is the first time you are reading this column, you have some catching up to do. Luckily, there is still time left on the 50 Bites clock — and passes are now 2-for-1!

One of the truly fun aspects of writing a column like this is getting to try new places that I might not otherwise. Recently I had been hearing a lot of buzz about a chicken sandwich at a place in Mays Landing called Freddy J’s Bar & Kitchen. So I decided to take a ride out and see what the fuss was about.
