Townsends Inlet Bridge to be closed overnight

Townsends Inlet Bridge to be closed overnight

The bridge that connects Sea Isle and Avalon will be closed overnight to remove temporary construction ahead of the busy summer season.

The Townsend’s Inlet Bridge will be closed from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Diane Wieland, director of the Cape May County Department of Tourism and Public Information, said in a press release a concrete construction barrier and a temporary traffic signal system will be removed.

The barrier was in place to separate the bridge railing replacement work zone from the active lanes of traffic. The bridge was using an alternating single-lane traffic pattern. When the bridge reopens, both the northbound and southbound lanes will be open and the Cape May County Bridge Commission will collect tolls southbound.

Wieland said there are a few planned lane closings in June for minor work and placements of steel plate on the bridge’s movable span.

The bridge is in the midst of a more than $2.6 million reconstruction project to remove the existing deteriorating steel bridge railing and install a new 4-bar system.

The final phase of construction is set to begin in September.
