A network of clinics that treat uninsured and low-income patients in southern New Jersey has been awarded $3 million in federal money to invest in electronic medical record technology.

The Southern Jersey Family Medical Center runs nine clinics in the region, including in Atlantic City, Hammonton and Pleasantville, according to its website. The company also runs a health center for women and children in Atlantic City and a dental center in Hammonton.

The money will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Part of that bill's goal was to help fund the updating of medical records technology to improve care by reducing errors and duplication.

The offices of Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, both D-N.J., announced the funding Tuesday.
