Construction work began last week to rebuild a section of Holding Road in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, which was damaged in August flooding.
Cumberland County spokesman Keith Wasserman said in a news release that contractors hope to have the road reopened by Christmas, weather permitting.
The road sustained flood damage between Silver Lake Road, or County Road 704, and Columbia Highway, or County Road 617.
Heavy rain that fell during the Aug. 14 storm and during Hurricane Irene Aug. 27 and 28 caused extensive flooding to roads, bridges, dams, and other structures in Cumberland County. That damage prompted the county to close portions of several roads — including Holding Road — pending repairs needed to make them safely passable.
