Tony Coppola elected new mayor of Galloway Township; new council members sworn in

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Friends and family members packed the council chambers for the swearing-in of new and re-elected members of the council as well as the new mayor and deputy mayor of the township.

Anthony J. Coppola Jr., who had previously served as the deputy mayor, was unanimously elected by the council as mayor and Richard Clute was unanimously elected as deputy mayor at the reorganization meeting on January 2.

“Seven years and I finally get to sit in the big seat,” Coppola said as he moved into the mayor’s chair on the dais. “Feels pretty good.”

Mary Crawford, James Gorman and Frank Santos were sworn in as newly elected council members and Robert Maldonado as a re-elected council member.

In addition, Richard Smith was sworn in as chief of the township’s fire department.

At the regular business meeting that immediately followed reorganization, Smith presented recently-retired Chief Chuck Mackintosh with a plaque and thanked him for his over a decade-long service to the Bayview Volunteer Fire Company.

“It has been my honor to work alongside Chuck for all these years and call him my friend,” Smith said. “He has no idea the mark he has left on our fire department.”
