Hypodermic needles and syringes were found scattered in the dunes and bulkhead area of the beach and on the Boardwalk in Ventnor Monday morning, police said.

Shortly after 8 a.m., Capt. Michael Miller said, police responded to a jogger's report of numerous needles and syringes located on the dunes and Boardwalk between Cambridge and Dorset avenues.

Officers located 47 syringes, Miller said, and notified the Atlantic County Health Department.

The incident did not necessitate the closure of any beach areas, Miller said.

The source of the syringes is under investigation, but police said it does not appear that they washed up from the ocean.

Anyone with information can call Ventnor police at 609-822-2101.
