A Dominican national arrested for allegedly downloading child pornography had been working with children at a local gymnastics center.

Gilvantroi Abreu Fernandez, 31, was arrested at his home in Atlantic City earlier this month after a monthlong investigation revealed he downloaded images of children being sexually exploited or abused, according to information previously released by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

But The Press of Atlantic City has learned Abreu Fernandez had been working as a guest coach at Bright Stars Academy in Egg Harbor Township, where he was known as “Coach Troi.” There have been no charges related to his work as a coach.

He listed himself as unemployed on his paperwork at the time of his arrest, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Owner Bonnie Pettit declined to comment on the case but sent an email to parents assuring them nothing went on at her gym, since her policy includes having at least two adults with the children at all times.

“I have always taken every step to ensure the safety of each and every child who enters our facility,” Pettit wrote.

She pointed out not only her “constant presence in the gym and monitoring the staff, children and families” but that the gym uses a closed-circuit system of 16 high-definition cameras.

“I have put my heart and soul into keeping the children safe as they grow and develop in my gym, and I will continue to be as vigilant as possible,” she wrote. “I only ask that you do not pass judgement at this time since it has already been confirmed the recent media coverage had several errors and those accused are always considered innocent until proven guilty.”

Pettit does not say what those errors may have been.

Parents at the gym declined to comment about the situation, with at least one saying they trust Pettit.

Computer equipment seized at Abreu Fernandez’s home contained child pornography obtained from a file-sharing network, according to the complaint.

He is charged with endangering the welfare of children, a second-degree charge that carries a potential sentence of five to 10 years in prison. He is being held in the Atlantic County jail on $100,000 bail.

Abreu Fernandez has been approved for a public defender, but none has yet been appointed, according to court records.
