BRIDGETON - The Cumberland County Court House is undergoing the first stage of a clean-up operation following Wednesday's torrential downpour and resultant flooding.
Freeholder Director Lou Magazzu confirmed that all but a few inches of floodwater that made its way to the lower level of the courthouse has been pumped out.
"Crew members from the Bridgeton and Downe Township fire departments worked fevereshly late into the night to pump the 3 to 4 feet of water that quickly made its way along basement corridors and offices," Magazzu said.
Cumberland County Director of Public Safety James Matlock said the Cumberland County fire police played a major role in controling traffic in the area while the firetrucks worked the pumps.
"This is a huge undertaking only possible with the know-how and efficiency of all county agencies and departments and the city of Bridgeton. The maintenance department has been instrumental in the entire clean-up operation, and we are grateful for the much-needed hand that the Salvation Army always provides," Matlock said.
County Administrator Ken Mecouch said work crews are being aided by the Mark I Restoration Services in the clean-up.
"The board will be approving an open-ended emergency contract this eveing," Mecouch said Thursday, adding that it is too early to say when the courthouse will reopen. "We had water damage that included water to five elevators, and until it is determined that the building is safe and suitable for public use, the building will remain closed. However, we are working toward a partial reopening Friday. That opening will be determined later today."
