OCEAN CITY - Police said a city man crossed the line while trying to scare children for Halloween when he threw a knife at trick-or-treaters waiting for candy on his porch.
When costumed children, including one dressed as the serial-stabber Jason from "Friday the 13th," came to his front door at 7:44 p.m. Saturday, Michael J. Mandzuick, 53, of the 400 block of Asbury Avenue, retrieved a large carving knife of his own from his kitchen. As parents looked on in disbelief, Mandzuick hurled the knife in the direction of the children, including the one dressed as the Hollywood villain who was brandishing a fake, rubber knife.
The real carving knife stuck into the porch's wood deck a few feet from the children, police said.
Parents were not amused and dialed 911, Lt. Steven Ang said.
Bicycle police officer Robert Reichanek was in the neighborhood and responded. Ang said parents realized the knife display was a prank, but thought it had gone way too far.
"The guy said, 'That's not a real knife. I'll show you a real knife,'" Ang said. "The parents didn't feel threatened, but it was a very stupid act that could have resulted in someone getting hurt."
Mandzuick was intoxicated at the time and gave police a phony identity when they interviewed him about the incident, police said. He was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of a weapon and hindering apprehension.
Mandzuick was lodged Wednesday at the Cape May County jail on $1,000 bail set by Municipal Court Judge Richard A. Russell.
