WILDWOOD - City residents have until the end of business hours today to submit questions for the recall candidates forum being hosted Tuesday by the Greater Wildwoods Chamber of Commerce.
The forum, so far, is the only formal gathering of the six candidates scheduled before the Dec. 8 election.
Tracey Dufault, executive director of the chamber, said Thursday that her group felt it necessary to bring the candidates together to give people a chance to hear directly from them.
She expected at least 90 to 100 people to attend the Tuesday morning event, which will start at 8 a.m. at the Starlight Ballroom inside the Wildwoods Convention Center with a networking session. The candidates will then begin speaking at 8:30 a.m.
On Dec. 8, voters will be asked if they want to recall Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. and Commissioner Bill Davenport. If they do, they can fill the two seats from a selection of six candidates: Troiano, Davenport, Al Brannen, Edward Harshaw, John Roat and Ernesto Salvatico.
"There's so much debating going on around this recall. We did not want it to become a debate," Dufault said of the format for Tuesday's forum.
She continued, "We're asking them to just give us their best information, and let's stop hearing the gossip."
The chamber has not backed a candidate in the race. Dufault said none of the six people running for office is an individual member of the business group.
Tuesday's forum will begin with each candidate giving a three-minute introduction of themselves and their platforms.
Next, a question-and-answer session, moderated by Bill Culp of radio station WIBG, will run for about 40 minutes.
Anyone can submit a question via e-mail to info@gwcoc.org or by phone to 729-4000 to the chamber and a committee within the chamber will sort through the questions and prepare them for Tuesday.
Dufault said she is hoping for questions that apply to all the candidates, so residents can hear from all of them on a variety of issues.
After the question portion of the forum, each candidate will be given an additional three minutes to offer any closing remarks.
As of Thursday, there were 2,930 voters registered in Wildwood, according to unofficial numbers from the Cape May County Board of Elections.
City Clerk Christopher Wood said Thursday that the deadline to register to vote passed Tuesday. Sample ballots, he said, will be mailed next week and should be in voters' mailboxes by Black Friday, Nov. 27.
The election will take place Dec. 8, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
