GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - At least two people were injured and traffic snarled Friday afternoon after a car and a sport utility vehicle collided on the White Horse Pike at the intersection of Route 575.

The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m., and police were still trying to ascertain how it occurred, said investigating officer Patrolman Greg Bollinger. One driver was airlifted to a trauma center.

The white SUV lay on its roof in the westbound right lane of the White Horse Pike, sitting on top of the base of a traffic-light pole that was knocked down, and two traffic lights lay in the highway. The maroon car, completely demolished, was in a parking lot about 40 feet to the west.

Westbound traffic on Route 30 was diverted along Route 575 and eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane and heavily backed up. Northbound traffic on Route 575 was also detoured from the scene.

The Pomona Fire Company responded to extricate the driver of the SUV, according to a witness at the scene.

Richard Stockton College police assisted with traffic control.

Considering that White Horse Pike traffic goes through this intersection at 60 mph I'm surprised there aren't more accidents. Insane.

Every time there's an accident at Pomona Road and White Horse Pike (and I mean "EVERY TIME") it's always the traffic lights that come a tumbling down and suffer the most damage. Gee! I wonder how much it costs to replace those traffic lights "EVERY TIME" there's an accident there at that dangerous intersection? I guess the state or the county would continue to invest in replacing those traffic lights rather than invest in a new intersection with turning lanes. And as for old, lumpy, bumpy Pomona Rd. itself, will somebody please wake-up and repave that crappy stretch of road by the railroad tracks. What a disgrace!!!

Thank you, Sandinshoes… What the heck is with the county numbers? What are ya, new?

First, I hope those involved in the accident will be ok. However a note to The Press: when covering stories in South Jersey we tend to call roads around here by their names and not by the county numbers. You say Route 575 and Route 30 to most people and you will get a blank stare, now say Pomona Road and the White Horse Pike and you get recognition.
