ATLANTIC CITY - Dafiq Rasheed, 19, who ran as a City Council candidate in the city's June democratic primary, has died.

His father, Dennis White, and one of his aunt's said Rasheed was attending a pool party at a friend's house Saturday when he died. His aunt, who answered the phone at Rasheed's mother's house, said she believed the pool party was at a private home, although there was some uncertainty among the family members about which municipality the pool party was being held in. White said the incident took place in Mullica Township. His aunt said the cause of death was not immediately known, but Rasheed was reportedly under water for some time. She said the family is awaiting results of an autopsy.

White said his son, a politically active young man since his days at Atlantic City High School and now as a student at Rutgers University, was a good person.

"He was an inspiration to a lot of young people," White said.

Councilman Marty Small, who was Rasheed's running mate, said he learned of Rasheed's death at about 10 p.m. Saturday. He then went to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, mainland division, where he saw Rasheed's lifeless body.

"It hurts," Small said. "Here's a kid, 19 years old. He had a future in anything he wanted and he's gone." Small said he last spoke to Rasheed on Friday and the two spoke about Rasheed's interest in working for a law firm.

"It's sad. I always had a great relationship with Dafiq," Small said.

Rasheed graduated from Atlantic City High School in 2008, where he had served as the student representative on the Atlantic City Board of Education.

He was studying political science at Rutgers and expected to graduate in 2012.

I wasnt a personal friend of Dafiq but we went to high school together. We had a few classes together and even though he didnt know me he spoke to me everyday. Ive always been considered "not normal" and was made of sometimes. I remember the first time we spoke and he said i really like youre hair i wish mines was like that dont pay any of these people any mind. I thought that was pretty cool of him to say that even though we were complete strangers to each other. Dafiq was young and determined. He did alot for the class of 2007 despite his graduating year was 2008. He really was the standing voice for all the students in ACHS, making sure all the issues were resolved. Hes definitely an entity that will be missed. R.I.P and thanks for everything Dafiq

FACTS: 1. Dafiq was ill on meds. 2. He had been in that pool many times before. 3. The pool was well labeled with many signs. 4. His fiance stated he was ill at funeral mass. 5. Facebook and twitter reveals it all. Pray for family!

I will miss this fine young man who has been in every Democratic Affair ranging from Corzine's first election. I remember the time where Forester refused to debate with Corzine and our Dafiq with another young man dressed up as chickens and paraded some off-shore area. This event made the AC Press. Dafiq had such promise and enthusiasm for politics that I saw him not only as a future Federal Senator but maybe sitting on the Supreme Court in Wash, DC!

You were one of the sweetest guys in the High and always there when someone needed to talk...You will be loved forever, truely be missed but never forgotten...R.I.P Dafiq "Flip" Rasheed... This man should show as an example to everyone that thinks people from Atlantic City (especially Students from Atlantic City High School) that we too are able to become anything that we want as long as we put our heart and soul into it. Just because we may not have came from the higher end of society doesnt mean that we our selves dont hold our selves to higher standards. I hope that many others see that Dafiq IS a great man not a WAS. -Krystal

"He was not a swimmer" Quote from his father, I guess he's racist. I stated I was racist against lazy, incompetent, leeches on society, black, white or yellow. If you can't swim stay out of the deep end, I do. The majority of black and jewish people cannot swim, it's a fact. This is not a racist comment, if some of you dopes feel that it is you are in denial. Now go out and get jobs and clean your yard and try teaching your children to be productive members of society. Spare me the political correctness and get real.

Mr. Schwartz, at a time such as this when the family of this young man is faced with insurmountable grief, and the entire community is mourning the loss of such a bright shining star that walked among us for a short period of time, I find your comments to be offensive and totally out of line. Just remove yourself from your own thinking for just a moment in time, and imagine if you will that this was a family member of yours that was robbed of his entire life in a blink of an eye. Imagine if you will Sir, the pain and anguish you would feel if it were a loved one of yours. Sir, I AM A WHITE AMERICAN and I am truly ashamed of your comments on this forum. I apologize to the friends and family of this fine pillar of our community on behalf of Mr. Schwartz. THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU SIR, and some day both you and I and every one will answer to a greater power than our own.

Ummmm.... I'm Jewish and can't swim, nor can my family or many of my Jewish friends, it's a fact. This does not make me a racist. How many jewish or black swimmers do you see in the olympics?? Zero!! WTF, just because you're black doesn't mean you're good at everything, black people hate swimming so do jewish people, that's a fact. Why do you think our beach is a craphole?? Because the blacks running this City have never been on it, unless it was for a bogus photo-op, even then they wear a suit. F'n dopes pppork and ghosdog-get jobs and start paying taxes and then maybe I'll listen to what you have to say.

BernieSchwartz has in His previous comments stated, and confirmed, that He is a Racist, thereby rendering Himself and any future comments inconsequential. Bernie and those of HIS BREED having had their Conscience Seared by Prejudice and Hated, always attempt to inject their venom into the psyche of others in and effort to assuage their own inner turmoil, and elevate their self-esteem...Sorry Bernie you're going to have to LEARN to live with YOUR PERSONAL DEMONS...You have been Exposed and Excommunicated from Humanity...No further comments will be addressed to you!

Bernie is a jerk. Even at a point where everyone who normally exchanges different points of view in here, sets aside loose lips to pay reverence to a splendid individual's passing, he reveals his true colors. Yeah, I said it, somebody had to. Dafiq deserves more.

It's really sad that one of the few youth of A.C. that was getting an education and getting involved in the community, was taken at such a young age. rip.

My deepest sympathy to his entire family and all of his friends. I knew Dafiq for many years and he was a wonderful and outstanding young man. He had such potential and will truly be missed. He was a role model for today's youth -- well-mannered, educated, respectful and just a great, all-around individual. Dafiq -- Rest in Peace. I am SOOOO stunned and saddened by the lost of DR...and what a HUGE loss to the AC community....I've only gotten to know DR in the months leading up the election but in that time I've gained much knowledge from his speeches as well as his personal conversations with me. DR was very hardworking, intelligent, passionate and so much more. He REALLY would've changed AC politics (for the better) in the years ahead. This is incomprehensible. GOD really takes the best ones......R.I.P. Dafiq...I miss you, dude....(Laquay W.)

I am truly heartbroken to learn about the tragedy of such an inspiring young man. Dafiq was a very hardworking, dedicated, and respectful student. He will truly be missed by the young and older generations alike. Dafiq was "a role model of hope" for the next generation. May God bless Dafiq's family and friends. He will truly be missed... but always remembered. Sincerely, Ms. Nina Chavis

We had the pleasure of listening to this bright young man speak on the campaign trail during the Atlantic City Primary. He was a wonderful spirit with great potential and someone who cared greatly and was passionate about his community. He will be sadly missed. The entire Kurtz for Mayor team wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends and to Councilman Small for this VERY TRAGIC loss. It is a void that will certainly not be filled any time soon. Rest in Peace Mr. Rasheed.
