Il Divo in Atlantic City
Who Are They: Simon Cowell first rounded up the four classically trained singers who would become Il Divo in 2004. At first, they struggled to find a musical niche, with their pop songs performed in an operatic style, but the group has since sold more than 22 million records after touring with Barbra Streisand in 2006.
What To Expect: Il Divo's members come from almost every corner of the globe. David Miller is a tenor from America, Urs Buhler is a tenor from Switzerland, Carlos Marin is a Spanish baritone and Sebastien Izambard is a French pop singer. All four members had professional careers in opera or popular music before they were chosen by Cowell. The songs on their most recent album, "The Promise," are distinctly pop, with songs by ABBA and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. But they are sung in Il Divo's own operatic style.
Event Info: The show begins at
9 p.m. in the Event Center at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. Tickets are $75, $125, $150 and $195, and are available at the Borgata box office or from ComcastTix at 800-298-4200 or www.theborgata.com
Michael Jackson tribute at Boogie Nights
What Is It: Since his death last week, people and venues the world over have been paying tribute to Michael Jackson. This weekend it's time for Boogie Nights - the popular 1970s and '80s themed dance club at Resorts Atlantic City - to stage its own event to mark the passing of "The King of Pop." Jackson's music has always figured prominently in the club's soundtrack, so expect to hear lots of it tonight and Saturday night.
What To Expect: Having fun is the point at Boogie Nights, so don't expect too somber an evening.
"At Boogie Nights, we live in the 1970s and 1980s. Even though he passed in 2009, it never goes past 1989 at Boogie Nights. We're not the real world. He lives on forever," is how club producer Dave Pena explained plans for the weekend. Count on having the chance to dance to songs from throughout Jackson's career as well as disco-era tunes from other artists. The mix also will include some record quotes from Jackson as well as his music videos. A surprise guest will be on hand, and - be warned - expect at least a fan or two to attempt to moonwalk.
Event Info: Boogie Nights is located inside Resorts Atlantic City. The party begins at 9 p.m. tonight and Saturday. Cover charge is $10 tonight, $15 Saturday. Call 800-336-6378.
The Wallflowers at Borgata
Who Are They: The Wallflowers entered the music world in the post-grunge roots-rock revival. Jakob Dylan, singer, songwriter, guitarist and son of legendary rocker Bob Dylan, led the band through five album releases and a Top 10 spot on the pop charts during its 13 year career.
What To Expect: The band is a descendant of the likes of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen but its sound is unmistakably its own. Fans can expect to hear hits such as "One Headlight," "The Difference" and "6th Avenue Heartache." The band also is releasing a greatest hits album with two unreleased tracks that will drop later this year.
Event Info: The show begins at 9 p.m. at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa Music Box. Tickets are $35 and are available at the Borgata box office or from ComcastTix at 800-298-4200 or www.theborgata.com
