Published: Jul 03, 2008

Art lovers looking for something to do between the morning Independence Day parades and the evening fireworks can stop by the Gilt Complex art gallery in Avalon for local artist Stan Sperlak's solo exhibition, which opens Friday, July 4.

Sperlak, a Cape May Court House native, works in pastels on various grounds, and is most noted for his boldly colorful paintings done on location throughout the Mid-Atlantic. His solo exhibition, an annual event at the Gilt Complex gallery, is comprised mainly of studio paintings derived from his outdoor studies and focuses on boats, beach scenes and seascapes.

An opening reception for Sperlak's exhibit is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 5. Refreshments will be provided and a painting by Robert Henri will be auctioned off to benefit the Sunshine Foundation, which grants children with terminal illnesses a wish of their choice.

The Gilt Complex gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Call 609-967-1100 or visit www.giltcomplex.com. More
